
Unlike the first generation antihistamines, fexofenadine and other second-generation antihistamines do not readily enter the brain from the blood, and, therefore, they cause less drowsiness. Fexofenadine was approved by the FDA in July, 1995.

The pill is the least costly. The oral-dissolving-tablet (ODT) and suspension cost more and are targeted for children. All fexofenadine products are either tier 1 or tier 2. Finally comes tier 3 oral antihistamines: Clarinex and Xyzal. Insurances companies have placed these 2 here because they are available only by prescription and there are no generic equivalents available.

Many things can cause migraines, and Allegra may be one of them. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have migraines while taking the drug. Therefore, if you are taking Allegra and migraines (or other headaches) occur, talk to your healthcare provider.
