
DOSING: Hydroxyzine has its maximal effect about 30 to 60 minutes after it is taken. Its effects last for 4 to 6 hours. The recommended dose for treating pruritus is 25 mg given 3 or 4 times daily. When used for sedation, the recommended dose is 50 to 100 mg. Anxiety and tension are managed with 50 to 100 mg 4 times daily. Hydroxyzine can be taken with or without food.

Insomnia: The perception or complaint of inadequate or poor-quality sleep because of one or more of the following: difficulty falling asleep; waking up frequently during the night with difficulty returning to sleep; waking up too early in the morning; or unrefreshing sleep. Insomnia is not defined by the number of hours of sleep a person gets or how long it takes to fall asleep. Individuals vary normally in their need for, and their satisfaction with, sleep. Insomnia may cause problems during the day, such as tiredness, a lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, and irritability.

This medicine is an antihistamine used to treat anxiety, to relieve itching caused by allergic conditions, and to cause drowsiness. Antihistamines work by decreasing the effects of histamine, a chemical the body releases that narrows air passages in the lungs and contributes to inflammation.
