
The most common Atarax side effect is drowsiness and anxiety hyperventilation which is mostly non-permanent and may vanish within a few days or when the dosage is reduced. Other side effects that may occur include dry mouth, twitches, shocks and convulsions. The last 2 complications often occur when Atarax is given at a higher then recommended dosage.

Atarax is indicated for relief of anxiety and tension caused by psychoneurosis and organic disease states in which anxiety is manifested.

PRESCRIBED FOR: Hydroxyzine is used for the relief of pruritus (itching) caused by various allergic conditions. Hydroxyzine is also used for treating anxiety and tension, and inducing sedation prior to or after anesthesia.
